Winners of the State Media Awards for 2008 were announced on June 10th 2009 at a ceremonial event at the BMICH in Colombo. Organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the annual ceremony recognises achievements for creativity and excellence in TV productions. Young Asia Television received 11 awards for three of its productions, under the categories Best Drama Series and Best Magazine Programmes. The awards were presented by the the Prime Minister, Hon. Ratnasiri Wickramanayake and recieved by Hilmy Ahamed, CEO, YATV.
The State Media Awards for 2008 recognised YATV's highly acclaimed drama
series The East is Calling, in the categories Best Drama, Best Direction,
Best Script, Best Camera, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Art Direction, Best
Make Up, Best Supporting Actress. The programmes Sathi and Paalama-Paalam were
awarded for Best Magazine Programme. The East is Calling is a bi-lingual
drama series that highlights the impact of the tsunami on community relations
in Sri Lanka.
The series was directed by the Asoka Handagama and produced by YATV. Sathi and
Paalama-Paalam are weekly programmes exploring various issues relating to the
conflict and its resolution in Sri
Lanka from a cultural and social
perspective.
Since 1995, YATV has been Sri Lanka's
leading social communications organisation, producing innovative TV programmes
for broadcast and spearheading bold media initatives, in Sri Lanka and Asia.
YATV enjoys a good reputation for its high production standards and
values-based programme content and has received many awards for its outstanding
programmes. The latest awards come at an important time in the history of
YATV - the organisation has recently launched a channel on PEO TV, in
partnership with Sri Lanka Telecom. YATV is proud to be recognised at the State
Media Awards 2008 and is encouraged to kieep up its committment towards making
a significant contribution to the media industry in Sri Lanka.
