Crossing Fires

by Thushara Dharmawickrama last modified 2009-03-30 12:05

Produced in 2005-2006, this 13 Part documentary series, Crossing Fires explores the multiple experiences and perspectives of women in conflict and post-conflict situations and assesses their participation in peace building and post-conflict reform. It goes beyond the conventional images of women as victims of war and looks at the many different ways in which women interact with both war and peace - how it has changed their lives and affected their future.

A majority of the civilian victims of war are women. They are also the majority of refugees and IDPs. They are vulnerable to sexual violence. They are breadwinners and economic agents. They are part of the military rank and file. They are entrepreneurs, ex combatants, land mine survivors, peace builders, community leaders. These are the women that feature in this series of 13 x 25 minute programmes, to be broadcast in Sri Lanka from December 2005 - February 2006.

Crossing Fires was produced with support from DANIDA in Sri Lanka and has been broadcast on TV in Sri Lanka.
